Critically engage ONE of the three passages below from Ernest Gaines’s novel, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Your task in this essay is threefold:
1. Offer a close reading of the passage
2. Identify and discuss its importance in relation to the broader themes and issues in Gaines’ novel
3. Relate your chosen passage and its themes to some of the broader issues examined in the course.
In crafting your essay, you can speak to one or more of the suggested themes/topics that appear after each quote, but you do not have to cover all, or even any of them if you would like to take your analysis in a different direction. They are suggestions to help you start thinking about possible topics for your essay.
Use all relevant sources in the course and at least one external journal article, chapter in an anthology, or a book, to support your reading of the novel. Use the Modern Language Association (MLA) search engine, available electronically through York’s library systems, to find your external sources.
Everything else will be posted in the attachment.
